BURN YOUR BRIDGE

But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62 NKJV)
History tells us that the great General George Washington in his battles at the birthing of America as a nation, employed a peculiar strategy. After the conquest of a battle, he moved on, crossed the river and sets ablaze the bridge on it behind them. First, his own soldiers no longer have the temptation to deflect to the enemy camp; secondly the enemy would not sneak to their camp behind them for a counter-attack!
Moses led the children of Israel successfully across the Red Sea and the Lord closed the sea upon the pursuing enemy Egypt to destroy them. No sooner the people crossed over to the other side after some difficulties than they started hollering to go back to Egypt. Had God not closed back the sea, many probably would have insisted on turning back! God does not expect us to look back with desires to go back to the old sinful ways of our past. Remember Lot's wife who looked back and lost all. Looking back to where we used to be destroys our contribution to the work of God. For many years after I retired from professional practice for full ministry work, I dreamt regularly that I re-established a new state-of-the-art diagnostic business with foreign partnership that stood above others. Thank God I had sold my practice. God upheld me in my new work for Him. Looking back would have changed my focus and direction. Going back stops us from becoming what God wants us to be.
When the going gets tough and rough, the tendency gets stronger to return to our old ways which now suddenly appears better, and forget the struggles and regrets we encountered back then, from which God had released us and relocated us. This is a distraction. It is an evil design to hinder our progress and distrust God's plan and purpose for us. Jacob was strongly enticed by Laban to return and continue serving him for better wages and perhaps another wife and more concubines. Jacob declined and ended up raising the nation of Israel of twelve tribes by his twelve children. That was God's purpose for his life. Friends, when the road gets tough that's when to brace up, sharpen your tools and use the obstacles to climb to the next level. It is a new beginning! When you burn your bridge, you are saying "I trust God to open up for me His own way to His ordained purpose for my life. And He will.
