THEY THAT WORSHIP GOD

It is written for our admonition in John 4:24, 'God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.' In 2016 I decided to examine deeper this verse of scripture by looking at bible characters who were giants in the worship of Jehovah God to see how we could learn more about worship of His majesty. I wrote my thoughts in my book published the same year titled Sunday Devotional Worship (still available on Amazon.com), in which I x-rayed the lives of fourteen bible personalities. Starting from today, here are the 14 excerpts from the book.
1. ABEL
'...Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord . Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering' (Gen.4:3-5 NKJV).
Have you observed a little boy with something in his hand that you ask for, whether or not you are the one who gave it to him? He either gives it to you wholeheartedly, half-heartedly or says no outright, depending on how much he cherishes that thing in his hand. It does not depend on whether you need it or not. The boy's reaction to the request to give reveals one truth: Givers willingly part with even what they treasure; non-givers refrain from parting with even that which they do not treasure! And there are those who stand between the two extremes: half-hearted givers! Cain was one, and God rejected his offering. That should say something to us. Abel's offering was wholehearted, and God 'respected' it. Why? Abel's offering honoured God.
Note the following:
  • Our offering can either face respect or rejection from God, depending on the heart with which we give it.
  • A defective offering is not acceptable to God; it must be clean and brought from a clean source.
  • The spirit with which it is given must please God; God loves a cheerful giver.
  • Offering with life and blood in it is more pleasing to God than a lifeless one; the lamb sacrificed was a type of Christ.
  • God would not accept offering from the source He had cursed; He only respects offerings from the redeemed.
  • Abel offered not just one lamb but an unspecified number out of his flock, and with their fat; there are some who give more than the specified ten percent tithe to God!
  • Abel gave the firstborn of his flock; God wants the first and the best from us, not our leftovers.
Right from the onset, the Bible is showing us that our acceptable worship to God must be sincere. One writer says, "For worship to be acceptable to God, we must have obedient lives. The ritual is not enough – the attitude is what is most important. God does not want hypocritical worship, people who say He is great but do not act like it...If we are going to say that God is worthy of all worship, then we should believe it in our hearts, and if we believe it, it will show in our actions. Real worship changes everything we do, because it changes who we are. Worship must be in the heart, not just at the place of worship"(Grace Communion International).
