Great Names of Jehovah [12]

Image
JEHOVAH NISSI   And Moses built an altar and called its name, The- Lord -Is-My-Banner; for he said, “Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord  will  have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” (Exodus 17:15-16 NKJV).        The Commonwealth Institute, London was founded in 1962 to promote the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of 54 countries working towards shared goals of prosperity, democracy and peace. In the seventies, the Commonwealth Secretariat on High Street Kensington London proudly displayed an array of 54 hoisted flags of member countries. I felt proud to see the Nigerian flag blowing gently in the summer breeze in a long line of flags of nations headed by the domineering British 'union jack'. But by 2015, the flags had been lowered and the proud banners of nations, disappeared. The kingdom had fallen like others before her. Only God's Kingdom banner shall remain standing forever.          In Exodus 17, Moses erected an altar of sacrifice to God when

JEHOVAH TSIDKENU    “For the time is coming,” says the Lord , “when I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land. And this will be his name: ‘The Lord Is Our Righteousness" (Jer.23:5-6 NLT).                 I must have been just about ten years old when I attended a revival meeting in church with my parents and other siblings. The revivalist preached in a way that convicted both old and young of sin and judgment, vividly picturizing the fate of sinners in hell. I made up my young mind not to sin again for fear of going to hell, so I refrained from all my rascally and mischievous ways by remaining calm and mute from then but alas, my restraint only lasted a day or two!       Tsidkenu comes from the Hebrew word 'tsedek', meaning just or righteous. It is important to know God as Jehovah Tsidkenu because we can never be righteous through our own efforts (Isaiah 64:6

ALPHA AND OMEGA   “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13).                In the animal kingdom, the first in any group of the same animal species is named the alpha, and is usually the dominant male. He is the head of the herd, the respected and acclaimed leader whom all the others fear and to whose authority they submit. Like a king, the alpha male rules, defends and judges the others in the group, quick to free the innocent from the oppression of the wicked, and punish the guilty one. He stands in the forefront and defends their territory in the event of  any external attack. He is the image of Jesus Christ in the kingdom of higher animals.         The first letter in the Greek and Hebrew alphabets are _alpha & aleph_ respectively. These words indicate the beginning or the first among a given system or group. When Jesus appeared to  Apostle John on the Island of Patmos and introduced Himself as The Alpha and The Om

SON OF GOD When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying , “ This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”  (Matthew 3:16-17 NKJV).         Decades back, I took my children with me to an outreach by my chapter of the Full Gospel  Business Men's Fellowship International. When the man of God ministering made the altar call, my son stepped out along with others and the minister prayed for them individually. While praying for my son, he looked up and asked, "Who is the parent of this boy?" I raised up my hand and answered, "He is my son". The man of God told me God had endowed the boy with knowledge and wisdom. Later, the boy was selected to attend the National School for Gifted Children and finally graduated from university with honours. He has since been exhibiting gre

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS   And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses....And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Rev. 19:14, 16 NKJV)                  We were still in primary school when Her Royal majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh visited Nigeria on what became her last one before Nigeria became an independent nation in 1960. As children we had the role of being lined up on the streets waving our mini British flags, a.k.a. 'Union Jack', cheering and hailing the sovereign Queen of the British Commonwealth. Children's Day, now presently celebrated every May 27 in many parts of the world, Nigeria inclusive, started as Empire Day, the day observed throughout the British Commonwealth nations since the first decade of the 20th century.         Today, like other past kingdoms of this world, only relics of the British Empire remain.   MESSIAH   The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in th e name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!” (John 12:12-13 NKJV).                   A coronation is both the symbolic religious ceremony during which a sovereign is crowned and the physical act of placing a crown on a monarch's head. King Charles III's coronation will take place on Saturday May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London. It formalises the monarch's role as the head of the Church of England and marks the transfer of their title and powers. King Charles had been named the next King of the English people from an earlier date even  before her late mother vacated the throne.          The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem was a kind of coronation, for the people welcomed and crowned their long-awaited King. The Messiah had long been

IMMANUEL   “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” ( Matthew 1:23 NKJV) .                   A beloved sister I know who had waited on the Lord for so long, finally got married. Again she waited long before having the fruit of the womb. When eventually the baby boy came, because his mother is so beloved by many, got perhaps the longest list of names on record, including Samuel, Emmanuel, etc. But happily, the sister finally settled to be known as and called Mummy Emmanuel. To her, that name is best for her boy.          Immanuel is the original Hebrew name in the bible but has been transliterated in Greek to Emmanuelou and then in English to Emmanuel. But what makes Emmanuel the favourite among other names? The simpler answer would probably be because Emmanuel is the name of Jesus, but a more realistic answer would be beause of the actual meaning of the name Emmanuel - God with us! Better to

JESUS And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. (Luke 1:31-32 NKJV)                 I have been saved from danger a number of times just by calling out the name Jesus. Perhaps among the most notable instances was the time I drove into a filling station to buy fuel into my car not knowing that right then armed men were robbing the station in broad daylight. Just as I stopped by a pump, I felt from behind the cold touch of a gun nozzle on my jaw. Instinctively, I shouted  "JESUS". Suddenly the voice of the gang leader came from another side ordering, "Let him go"! My captor stepped back and I sped off breathlessly out of the station. The instinctive call of Jesus from my mouth saved me and my daughter!        The Bible says, Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name w

POWER IN UNITY

Olusegun Isaac Blog. Acrylic painting on canvas By 'Demi Ojosipe-Isaac "If a country divides itself into groups which fight each other, that country will fall apart.  If a family divides itself into groups which fight each other, that family will fall apart." (Mark 3:24-25 GNB).               Here's the story of a newly married sister. Directly after her wedding, a former suitor started phoning to tell her he hadn't given up his interest in her. He told her he didn't mind that she was now married and that he would still fulfill all his promises to her if only she would continue to see him. She pleaded with him to leave her alone, that she was very happy with her husband, but he wouldn't give up, rather he continued pestering her with phone calls. Frustrated, she shared her predicament with her husband and the latter planned with his wife to confront the insistent suitor. She took him to the suitor's office and they both disgraced him openly, making hi

CHOICES

"And  if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .” So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods.."  ( Joshua 24:15-16 NKJV).       Let's face it, almost all of us have found ourselves on the verge of decision taking before. The teenager had to choose which course to study at which university; the marriageable youngster had to choose Mr. Right or Mrs. Right (sometimes choosing one out of two or more!); which job to do; which place to live or how many children to have. The sad news is, many have taken decisions by a mere toss of the coin and have regretted their actions painfully thereafter. They failed to bring into their choices the God factor.        Right from the Garden of Eden, God had given mankind the privilege of making choices. In Genesis 2, God showed man two types of fruits, those good for food and

Image (Painting) ©: Demi Ojosipe-Isaac        This was the title of my charge to the mixture of elites and bourgeoisie who were seated at the 70th birthday celebration of a colleague recently as chairman at the occasion. Although I was not able to say most of what I now present here at the occasion because of time constraint, I managed to present as testimony my own experience as a retired professional.         When I became 60 years old, I started planning to retire from my active medical laboratory practice at age 65 into the service of the Almighy God. I chose the most competent among my laboratory scientists and told him my plan to give him a share in the business. So I started grooming him with the aim of making him a director five years later. He complied very well but just near the end of the five years, he resigned and left for another job perhaps for greater opportunities. The young man died a while later, so there was no possible reconciliation. I became too angry to trust

NEW YEAR, NEW START

Image
Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:18-19 NKJV) As each year rolls by, i reiterate on my achievements in the year ending. Invariably, I find I have entered another year with many requests from God still outstanding. What can the matter be?  Hasn't God promised to grant us the desires of our heart? One writer quipped, As the calendar turns to January, we’re filled with hope that this year is going to be different, that things are going to be better. But, God doesn’t make us better—He makes us new!  I couldn't agree with her less!  More than anything, the fault is ours! There is a condition to fulfill first. Something has to change in our lives for our total fulfilment to come. The key to prosperity and well being is obedience to God and His word. The bible says in Isaiah 1:19, If you are wi
