Great Names of Jehovah [11]

JEHOVAH TSIDKENU

“For the time is coming,” says the Lord , “when I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land. And this will be his name: ‘The Lord Is Our Righteousness" (Jer.23:5-6 NLT).

I must have been just about ten years old when I attended a revival meeting in church with my parents and other siblings. The revivalist preached in a way that convicted both old and young of sin and judgment, vividly picturizing the fate of sinners in hell. I made up my young mind not to sin again for fear of going to hell, so I refrained from all my rascally and mischievous ways by remaining calm and mute from then but alas, my restraint only lasted a day or two!
Tsidkenu comes from the Hebrew word 'tsedek', meaning just or righteous. It is important to know God as Jehovah Tsidkenu because we can never be righteous through our own efforts (Isaiah 64:6). We can only be made righteous because Jehovah Tsidkenu has made the way for us through the blood of Jesus Christ. We have no righteousness of our own; our righteousness comes through our relationship with Jesus Christ the Righteous One whose blood cleanses our sins (1John 1:8,9).
The bible uses the word righteousness as substitute for the name Jesus without destroying the context in which it is used. An example of this is in the Book of Daniel: 'Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to Righteousness [shall shine] like the stars forever and ever' (Daniel 12:3)
The word Righteousness also conveys other meanings or uses; it may indicate uprightness, godliness or holiness - all attributes of Jesus Christ. There is none else righteous among the sons of men. As believers we can claim the righteousness of Jesus because we have been transformed through our belief that Jesus, the Sun of Righteousness, shed His blood to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. And our uprightness, godliness or holiness come only through Him.
