CHOICES

"And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .” So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods.." ( Joshua 24:15-16 NKJV).

Let's face it, almost all of us have found ourselves on the verge of decision taking before. The teenager had to choose which course to study at which university; the marriageable youngster had to choose Mr. Right or Mrs. Right (sometimes choosing one out of two or more!); which job to do; which place to live or how many children to have. The sad news is, many have taken decisions by a mere toss of the coin and have regretted their actions painfully thereafter. They failed to bring into their choices the God factor.

Right from the Garden of Eden, God had given mankind the privilege of making choices. In Genesis 2, God showed man two types of fruits, those good for food and one that would lead to death, spiritually speaking that is. But, no thanks to Mummy Eve, man chose to eat the good-looking death fruit, received God's curse and died spiritually. Fortunately or unfortunately, God has not removed that choice from us till date. In our opening scripture Joshua threw the choice in the face of the children of Israel after he had settled them in the land of promise. They chose wrongly and ended up groping in political wilderness under different unstable rules for nearly 400 years.

When Jesus came into the scene over 2000 years ago, He threw the choice at man afresh with the good news of salvation. He emphasized: "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one gets to the Father except through Me". However till date, men still dilly-dally in their choice of which path to follow knowing well which one leads to heaven or which one to hell. Our nation is currently at crossroads. The big difference is that we cannot know precisely which path will prosper us or which will lead to our doom. The good news is that God does and He wants us to prepare our hearts, come to Him and seek His face for direction. Then He will reveal His own choice to us, one that is His will. I suggest we all say our prayers each time before we enter the polling booth.

When the era of kings began in Israel, God sent Samuel to anoint another person among Jesse's sons to replace King Saul, who had fallen out of God's grace. Samuel got there and chose the first seven sons in quick succession, but God rejected every one of them. God's choice was the last and least likely son David, the shepherd lad from the trenches. They went and brought in David and God told Samuel to anoint him as king. David became the greatest king Israel ever had! God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.

It is written in the bible book of Daniel:  'And God changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him." (Daniel 2:21-22). Let only thy will come to pass, O Lord!
