UNITED, WE STAND!

"If a country divides itself into groups which fight each other, that country will fall apart.  If a family divides itself into groups which fight each other, that family will fall apart." (Mark 3:24-25 GNB).

Chickens are the fox's favourite meal, and chickens live in dread of the fox. But there's the story of a pack of chickens that killed a fox. The fox entered the fold of the chickens through a hatch door which automatically shut the fox in. The fox panicked and the chickens saw it; they became bold and turned vicious. The whole pack charged forward and aggressively attacked the fox until they pecked it to death. The old maxim remains true - there's power in unity!

There is power in unity. The enemies of any community cannot prevail if the dwellers stand in solidarity. Solidarity signifies continued fellowship whether in gain or loss, in honour or dishonour, in victory or defeat. Among people, it is the concerted effort geared towards the advancement of the common interest, purpose or goal of the whole community, against their common enemy . On this rests the survival of that community. Nigeria will become a formidable nation when Nigerians begin to strive together for the common good and not for individual, communal, ethnic, tribal or religious interests.

Here's the story of a newly married sister. Directly after her wedding, a former suitor started phoning to tell her he hadn't given up his interest in her. He told her he didn't mind that she was now married and that he would still fulfill all his promises to her if only she would continue to see him. She pleaded with him to leave her alone, that she was very happy with her husband, but he wouldn't give up, rather he continued pestering her with phone calls. Frustrated, she shared her predicament with her husband and the latter planned with his wife to confront the insistent suitor. She took him to the suitor's office and they both disgraced him openly, making him declare publicly that he would thenceforth refrain from disturbing their matrimonial peace. He yielded in disgrace. Their unity of heart saved the couple's home!

The average white man is first and foremost concerned for the good of his land. His personal interests are secondary. The black man had been too disoriented and disenfranchised to think otherwise through prolonged colonial enslavement which had started as far back as the 15th century in Africa. And modern slavery is still largely practised by imperial nations dangling foreign juicy carrots in the faces of disgruntled, discontented Africans making them leave home for greener pastures. Africans are presently unwittingly being lured into new style slavery!

The disciples of Jesus heeded the above wise saying of their Master. They cuddled together as a family after their Master left them, praying continually in the Jerusalem upper room as He had instructed. They remained there for long as one until the Master sent them the power of the Holy Spirit. That power created a fear and dread of them among the authorities and saved them from persecution and death. Because they stood together as one, the authorities stood their distance from them (Acts 5:17-39).

The power of unity is still with us. It is the same power of the Holy Spirit that fought for the disciples of Jesus. But we must be ready to pay the price as modern day disciples. We must stick together, pray continually for revival and operate under the unction of the Holy Spirit. When we do, no obnoxious religious laws nor any malicious systems of governance will prevail in the land no matter how subtle or sinister the strategy to introduce them may be. Jesus shall reign where'er the sun!
