WHAT IS MAN?
What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? (Ps.8:4 NKJV)
The answer to this question must necessarily be elucidated scripturally. Only God has the full meaning to His purpose for creating man and the fullness of creation. We read that in five days God prepared ahead all that man would need as a living being, then created man on the sixth day and breathed life into him. 'And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (Gen. 2:6-7). Then He spent the seventh day resting (Gen. 2:2). So God had all along been desiring fellowship with man. In order to fulfill this plan, not only did He make man in His likeness, He formed the garden in Eden where He would visit man in the cool of the day to roost with him. (Gen. 3:8).
Another question arises here. We are told God created man male and female. (Gen. 1:27). Why did God make room for procreation? If we read further, we have what appears to be a clue to that question; 'Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Gen. 1:28). So, God created man male and female for multiplication and domination. God needed man to rule over all His creation on earth thereby exercising his God-given power and authority over all other things He had made.
Further still, we read that God planted a garden and put man whom He had formed to tend and keep it (Gen.2:8,15). So we have another reason regarding God's purpose for creating man. There's work to be done in God's creation. Man and all other creatures under his dominion on earth need to survive and replicate. God made man to fulfill that assignment. (Ps. 8:6-8)
Question now is, why does God rate man so highly? What good will it serve Him? The Patriach Job, in the midst of his tribulation, asked God, “What is mankind that you make so much of them, that you give them so much attention, that you examine them every morning and test them every moment?" (Job 7:17-18 NIV). In spite of all His benevolence and endowments, man failed God, making Him curse man (Gen.3:17-19). And throughout the Old testament, all efforts to reconcile man back to God, including those of His greatest prophets, proved abortive.
The need for a Saviour of man arose. The book of Hebrews says, “...You have crowned him with glory and honour, putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, He left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him (man). But we see Him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.' (Heb. 2:7-9 ESV)
As the ultimate move towards reconciliation and redemption of man from his sinful state, we read in John 3:16, 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.' And Jesus Himself says, "In My Father’s house are many mansions...I go to prepare a place for you...I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:2-3) So at the end of all things, man, through redemption by the blood of Jesus Christ, would return to the Almighty Creator - renewed, purified and glorified, dwelling eternally in the bossom of his Maker! Halleluiah!
Can we then safely conclude that God's foremost reason for creating man is for His honour? Here's a passage from my book Perfected Praise, 'Man, created more developed and advanced than other beings, has been formed purposefully to give honour and adoration to his Maker. His mouth has been formed to sing; his neck, hands, palms, trunk, hips, thighs, legs, knees and feet have been shaped to allow movements of looking up, bending, bowing, clapping, raising hands, kneeling and jumping in praising and glorifying his Almighty Creator.
