Foremost Names and Titles of Jesus

ALPHA AND OMEGA

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Rev. 22:13).

The first letter in the Greek and Hebrew alphabets are 'alpha' and 'aleph' respectively. In the animal kingdom, the first in any group of the same species is named the alpha, and is usually the dominant male. He is the head of the herd, the respected and acclaimed leader whom all the others fear and to whose authority they submit. Like the king, the alpha male rules, defends and judges the others in the group, quick to free the innocent from the oppression of the wicked, and punish the guilty one. He stands in the forefront and defends their territory in the event of  any external attack. He is the image of Jesus Christ in that animal kingdom. Jesus is the King among men, His own kingdom. He is The Alpha!

Jesus is also The Omega - the last letter in the Greek alphabet, thus He will be the end of it all! By the same setting, the dominant male would be the last animal standing after a fierce and devastating attack by another hostile herd. Jesus Christ, the Omega, will destroy our enemy the devil at the end of the age (Rev.12:19). He will then rule and reign as King over all till eternity.

When Jesus appeared to  Apostle John on the Island of Patmos and introduced Himself as The Alpha and The Omega, it was easy for the Apostle to comprehend what He meant. He knew, by the Holy Spirit, that Jesus had been in existence before all things were created and would still be when all creation folds up at the end. He was with him and the other disciples at the start of His kingdom ministry on earth; had died, risen as He said, and had gone to heaven. He would come back for them at the end and they would be with Him till the unforeseeable end. He is, to His followers, the First and the Last.

Jesus Christ is the First in many aspects in the scriptures. The bible calls Him First Son of God the Father (Ps.89: 26,27), Firstborn from the dead (Col.1:18), Firstfruit (1Cor.15:23), Morning Star (Rev.2:28), Beginning of creation (Rev. 3:14), Dayspring (Luke1:78). Jesus has equally been named the last in other aspects: The last Adam (1Cor.15:45), The Finisher of our Faith (Heb.12:2), The Judge of the world (2Tim. 4:1), The Amen (Rev. 3:14). He is the only One whom God had positioned both at the beginning and  the end of all creation, the all in all!
