Foremost Names and Titles of Jesus

MESSIAH

“What about you?” he asked them (His disciples), “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matt.16:15-16 GNB).

In 1960 as a young lad stepping into the magnificent edifice of Christ Church Cathedral, Marina, Lagos for the first time  I couldn't stop marvelling at the superb, intricate Gothic architecture, hardly able to concentrate on our confirmation through hand-laying ceremony that was going on. Of greatest interest to me was the glass-stained colourful picture of Christ on the cross prominently displayed up above the back of the altar. To me it was like really seeing and knowing the Person of Christ, the Saviour of the world!

We read in John's gospel, 'One of the two who heard John speak, and (who) followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus...' (John 1:40-42a NKJV). Jesus came as the Messiah, not only for the Jews, but for the whole world.  The western Christian world later arrived at the translation of Messiah as Christ - the Anointed Saviour of the world.

According to a bible commentator, the transliteration of Christ into English deprives the word of much of its meaning; it would be better to translate Messiah as 'Christ the Anointed Saviour'. Jesus Himself said to all His followers, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).

These words of The Messiah became fulfilled as revealed to us in the book of Revelations: "Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. That's the assurance we have as followers of Christ these turbulent times!
