O GOD OUR HELP IN TIMES PAST

'So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and made them heads over you, leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties, leaders of tens, and officers for your tribes.' (Deuteronomy 1:15 NKJV).
God in His wisdom installs rulers over the nations, chooses leaders among the people and administers justice, peace and order in each land. Nations rule their peoples as they deem fit for their land - democracy, monarchy, capitalism, welfarism, socialism, communism and what have you, but God rules supreme over all. At the time of the reign of King David, Israel operated the monarchical system in which God chose the king and the king in turn chose leaders to administer the nation under his rule by selection not election (2 Sam. 8:15-18). Some last, some don't. Earlier, God had called Moses to lead His people Israel out of bondage in Egypt to become His own chosen nation. Moses led them out and set them on their way to the land of promise but soon realized that he could not do it all by himself. God saw his dilemma and sent him wise counsel. Moses acted accordingly in Godly counsel; in Deut.1:13-15 Moses recounts how he asked the people to elect their own leaders who in turn would serve the people. While other  may have failed, that is one principle that has appeared not found to fail - choosing leaders to rule the people from among the people by the people.
Our nation operates by democratic governance meaning that we choose our governments by  ourselves through an electioneering process. This we have done since our independence over fifty-eight years ago except for a 28-year interregnum of military rule (1966-1979 and 1983-1979) which, thanks to God, we are no longer experiencing. The different electioneering processes we scaled over in past years may not have been free, fair and transparent, but somehow God has always pulled us through. Even the 1966 near-disaster did not destroy our existence as an independent sovereignty. We have always escaped post-election chaos, war and genocide. Sometimes the thought crosses my mind that, like the Israelites of old, we are God's spoilt children; we bring trouble on ourselves but still call God to come in and helps us, and He does. The election process is still on-going and the day of investitures is still far ahead. Let us seek God's help for its overall success.
PRAYER:  O Lord, thank you for Your help in the past in our governance. Please arise in mercy  and help us through again, in Christ's name. Amen.
